Thanos and The Infinity Gauntlet

We all know about Thanos as one of the most powerful and strongest villains in the Marvel universe. However, when we study Thanos from his comic book roots we can shed some light upon the earlier life of Thanos and how he emerged to be known as the ‘MAD TITAN’. Thanos has killed many innocent beings and presented superior strength over anyone who came across his way to the Gauntlet. But before leaving towards a killing spree in the thirst of gauntlet what was Thanos like in the childhood and his teenager life. 

He was born on the Saturn moon ‘TITAN’ and belonged to a group of people called the Titanians who were the eternal beings. Titanians shared similar characteristics but the birth of Thanos came as a shock to everyone as the doctors saw it as a release of a demon. Initially doctors wanted to run some tests to diagnose why Thanos looked so different from others but his mother Sui-San refused to do so and accepted her son as a blessing and viewed him as a high strength individual who will never see the face of failure. During early stages of life Thanos stood as a unique being comparative to other kids of his age due to his physical appearance. He spent most of his childhood learning about the environment and his surroundings and became the Smartest kid in school. To mould and gel among other kids Thanos frequently attempted to learn about his genetics so that he could make other kids understand him better. Thanos took the matter to his father but was always ignored to be answered anything related to his appearance. As he became more popular in the school, he was admired by a mysterious girl who took quite interest in him. One day at school Thanos had to bisect a dead creature but it made him leave the lab and vomit. The same girl approached him and comforted him by telling that bisecting dead creatures would be easier if he does it more often. Thanos was not happy to hear that as he claimed he would not do that again ever even if it came in his way of becoming a great scientist like his father. The girl then told him that it is quite normal to feel like this and he should clear his head take some time and a great way to do is by visiting a forbidden cave. Thanos took her advice visited the cave along with his friends but much to their surprise the cave started rumbling and rocks stared to fell upon them. As a result, Thanos was trapped in the cave deserted from his friends for 3 days as he kept digging to reach the outer layers to find a way out. When thanos managed to escape, he found his friends dead bodies eaten by giant lizards that showed no interest in him due to his unattractive mutation. Finally, Thanos reached back to his civilization where everyone developed a theory that these killings were in fact done by Thanos himself as his inner demon has evolved instantly. Soon Thanos got deserted by his friends and people and only person who would still talk to him was that mysterious girl. She encouraged Thanos that if he really wanted to avenge his friends death, he should revisit the cave and kill all the creatures there. Along with that girl Thanos went back to the cave and attacked all creatures there with a knife as the girl witnessed the whole scenario from a distance. After a few years Thanos had completely rid himself of his fear and was successfully bisecting bodies and passed all his lab tests. Soon enough he discovered knowledge at school was not enough for him, so he decided to create his own secret lab where he studied living organisms. Up till this time Thanos considered himself as a valuable scientist looking for answers to the questions of his unprecedented existence. Considering his experiments, he started killing people of titan and the reinforcement of the mysterious girl led Thanos to believe that he actually enjoyed those killings and the experiments are just an excuse. In his maturity Thanos realized his true potential and continued his conflicted path of gaining ultimate power. He also killed his mother confessing the evil inside him and all the killings he had done on Titan. Eventually Thanos fell for that girl and proposed her but was welcomed by a slap from her. She told him how coward all these years he was of not accepting his true identity and that he is not worthy of love. 

But Thanos’s love for her pushed him beyond the limits to impress her as she was manipulating him to follow her own sadistic agenda. That mysterious girl was in fact the demonstration of death and she was the one to plant the idea of infinity gauntlet in his mind after which he started another journey to gain the power of stones to impress his girl. This whole journey is than presented in marvellous manner by Marvel studios in their series of films called the Infinity Saga.

Iron-Man

Iron-Man film, released in 2008, was about the character of Iron-Man and how he reveals himself to the world. It was the first movie by MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). In comics however, you will be surprised to hear this, the origin of Iron-Man does not come from the Iron-Man comic itself but Iron-Man was raised as a new hero by Marvel in “Tales of suspense” 1959 #39. Iron-man is one of the greatest heroes of Marvel because he has no supernatural powers, he is a reality that can come true.The origin story of Iron-Man in comics is tremendously different from the one in the movie itself.

• In the movie, Iron-Man 1, Tony is called to Afghanistan for the demonstration of his latest missile “Jericho”, which is a repulsorlift technology, it splits into 16 smaller missiles after reaching the entitled height and amplitude. It has a very powerful blast and creates the strongest shock wave. Whereas, in comic, tales of suspense 1959 #39, story starts with Tony Stark in a secluded area in U.S. defense perimeter showing US army general his latest invention of transistor that can increase the force of any device thousand fold.

• Next, in the movie Tony goes to Afghanistan with his friend Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes for the demonstration of his “Jericho” missile to fight against the terrorist group called “Ten Rings”. In comic Tony goes to Vitenam with U.S military to end the rules of a menacing tyrant Wong-Chu also called “The Red Gorilla Tyrant”. He goes to villages and challenges people of that village for a fight, if they lose he takes over the village.  

• In movie, Tony’s convoy is ambushed by Ten Rings and he gets hurt with a missile of his own industry (irony much? Yeah!!!) And a shrapnel enters his body stabbing him near his heart. In comic, Tony steps on a booby trap setup by the enemy and a shrapnel stabs him near his heart.

• In movie, the character of Professor Yinsen is shown as an unknown Russian scientist. He puts electromagnet in Tony’s chest to keep the shrapnel from entering his heart. Tony does not recognize him though they have met before. In comic, Professor Yinsen is a famous Chinese Physicist and Tony appears to be his fan. Tony works without the electromagnet in his chest.

• In movie, Tony stark builds a miniaturized arc reactor to keep his heart running and to power his suit. Yinsen and tony work together to build the iron-man suit. A very detailed making of Iron-man’s suit is shown in the movie. In comic, Tony makes tony transistors instead of an arc reactor and not a great lot of detail is given about his suit. The suit he built in Iron-man 1 is the exact replica of that in comic. In both, movie and comic, Yinsen dies while buying time for Tony’s suit to power up. In both, movie and comic, Tony has only one week before the shrapnel enters his heart and he will die.

• In movie, Iron-man fights the ten rings and avenges the death of his fellow. He destroys every weapon Ten Rings own because all of them belong to stark industries. In comic, a detailed fight of Iron-man and Wong-Chu is demonstrated. There is no mention of any weapon related to stark industries. There is a detail of technology installed in his iron suit like suction cups, pressure powered jet, Top-Hat transistor, and fire torch etc.

• The comic ends with Iron-man killing Wong-Chu and his gang whereas the movie continues leading to a different story. There are also other characters in movie like Pepper Potts, Obadiah Stane, Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes, Happy Hogan, Agent Phil Coulson (S.H.I.E.L.D) etc that are not there in the comic story.

Comics vs Cinema

INTRODUCTION

If a movie is based on a book people do tend to read the book later to see the difference between the book and the movie. People always complain about how the movie was so much different from the book and how the book was better than the movie and all, same situations had been faced by MCU as well but to cater to these complaints the directors of MCU, Russo Brothers, replied that their movies are different from the comics because if you already know the story the element of suspense will be exterminated and what was the point of making a movie when you can actually read the book. To me these explanations make total sense, most of the marvel fans have already read the comics and know their timeline fully and if a movie is made based on the comics they can ruin it for those who haven’t read the comics. There are a lot of people who prefer watching a movie instead of reading a book. Now because there is a huge percentage of people who do not read comics or to whom comics are not available, they have watched the movies but are clueless about if the movie replicates the comics or not, what is the story difference, what was the actual origin of the character is and more. Some people do not care to go deeper into the hustle of finding all those answers to the questions they have because you do not get complete information without spending hours into research. If you are a person, like me, who cannot sit until they have got all the answers to every query they have, without caring about how much time they spend in the research don’t worry because I will be your hero. I will write about every single MCU and DCEU movie, their relation with comics and difference between the story lines of movies and comics. You won’t have to spend those hours into tiring research just to end up with incomplete information. I will have for you every element in the store.
